Computer doesn't shut off?

When I shut my computer off, it doesn't actually shut off. It tends to go through the 'Updates', but recently it pauses during the shutdown, or during the updates. For example, two days ago I left when it said 'installing updates 2 of 2'. I returned 7 hours later to see that it didn't shut off. In fact, it still said 'installing updates 2 of 2'. It wasn't frozen though, the loading circle was still spinning. It's done this a couple of times now. I'm running windows 7, and am unsure how to fix this. Any suggestions? Please and thank you.
