Is it bad to be my dog's "equal"?

I am not the care taker for our dog, the responsibility falls on my brother. Our dog does listen to us very well (me included) but I believe I am our dogs equal. He sleeps on my bed whenever he wants (he doesnt dare getting on anyone's bed or couch besides mine). He will push and push for attention and steal toys. Since I am not the "master" of him, I have no problem being his "equal" because I love all the affection and playfulness I receive that my brother does not. Is this ok?
