Why is it impossible to successfully backup a Windows7 Ultimate 64bit operating system?

I have tried every option suggested by Microsoft, Computer mags, including shutdown of my Zone Alarm Security system, removal of Zone Alarm, attempts to use internal, external HDD, DVD, Flash Card backups. All have failed over the past 12 months.
